An interesting article was published that stated that nearly 1/3 of workplace professionals want to pursue a new job in 2020. That alarming statistic made us think-how can businesses keep employees and not lose them due to being bored, not challenged or disliking their workplace culture?
The answer to this question is simple. Providing learning opportunities to managers so they can learn new ways to work and communicate with their employees effectively so that you create a strong workplace and employees will want to stay. Even if you have the managerial basics down, there is always an opportunity to learn, especially since managers need to be able to wear a lot of hats. Bottom line is that employees want to be able to communicate freely with their managers. But do your managers know how to communicate effectively to impact their employees?
So, where do you begin? According to the article, 23% said that the reason they want to leave their job is that they are bored. How do managers handle boredom? With effective communication, a manager would learn that their employees want more challenging projects at work or perhaps creating a career plan, so you know how your employees want to grow. When you check in with your employees and let them provide feedback, you will be able to have an open conversation and handle any work issues that may arise.
In a different question, 28% said that getting assigned to a more challenging, high-profile project would most improve their opportunities to advance at their current employer. When employees see the value in the work they do, they feel more valuable, become more engaged, and are more motivated to do great work.
What is interesting is that fewer than 10% said that other traditional work-related aspirations, such as getting a raise, earning a promotion, or achieving a better work-life balance were on their wish list. Employees want to be challenged and valued. When helping employees understand what is expected of them, and give them the feedback they need, as well as involve them in solving problems and issues, you’ll find each person is more successful and can achieve their goals.
